One of the most well-known teachings of Jesus is from the Gospel of Matthew (Chapters 5–7). Below is a summarized sermon inspired by the themes and words of Jesus.
Brothers and sisters, gather close. Today, I want to speak to you about the path to true blessedness—not as the world sees it, but as God has designed it. These words are not just laws to follow but a glimpse into the Kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed Are You
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Rejoice, for great is your reward in heaven! Even when the world mocks or misunderstands you, know this: the prophets before you walked the same path.
Be the Light
You are the salt of the earth—meant to preserve goodness and enhance life. But if salt loses its flavor, how can it serve its purpose? Stay true to who God calls you to be.
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Let your light shine before others, not to bring glory to yourself but so they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Love Without Limits
The law tells you not to kill, but I say even anger can lead you astray. Be reconciled with your brothers and sisters before bringing your gifts to God.
You’ve heard, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” But I say, turn the other cheek. If someone demands your coat, give them your shirt too. Go the extra mile—not to earn praise, but to show the love of God.
Love your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you. For if you only love those who love you, how are you different from anyone else? Be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect.
The Heart of True Faith
When you give to the poor, don’t announce it with trumpets. Do it quietly so your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
When you pray, don’t use many words just to be heard. Go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. He already knows what you need. Pray like this:
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.”
Store your treasures in heaven, not on earth where moths and rust destroy. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Trust in God’s Provision
Do not worry about your life—what you will eat or wear. Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of more value than they?
Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Judge Not, Lest You Be Judged
Do not judge others, for with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Before you point out the speck in your brother’s eye, take the log out of your own.
Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened. Your Father in Heaven delights in giving good gifts to those who ask.
Build on the Rock
Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise builder who built his house on a rock. When the rain came and the winds blew, the house stood firm.
But those who hear and do not act are like a foolish builder who built on sand. When the storm came, great was its fall.
Go now, and live these words—not as commandments to check off but as a lifestyle of love, mercy, and humility. In this way, you will shine as children of the Kingdom, reflecting the love and glory of our Father in heaven.
